Step of Green
While developing the creative garden designs for our clients at Wilson WARE Group we have found two things to be true. Good design and good construction are not always hand in hand and often construction and craftsmanship are not either. To alleviate these problems we developed our sister company Step of Green to assist in building and maintaining the gardens we designed or designed by others. Step of Green, handles the two biggest questions our clients have, who can build the garden and who can help me maintain it? We offer a variety of services within Step of Green see below to find out how we can turn your problem into and asset.

Proper pruning of the gardens vegetation is so much more than a pair of clippers and a trash can. Pruning is essential to the long term health of the plants, strength of the plants and most importantly the aesthetic to the plants. We take great care and pride in assuring plants are pruned at the proper seasonal cycle, within horticultural limits and most importantly to maintain the plant within the original intent of its placement. Our pruning operations can vary depending on client and species of plant, but as a general rule we follow the practice below.

Paver and Stone Walkways
Step of Green is first to point out that often the most import parts of every garden at the shapes of the lawn and the proper use of hardscape elements. We are well versed in concrete pavers, clay pavers and a wide variety of stone products available for our climate. We take extra care to assure adequate sub base material is installed, proper compaction is attained and necessary drainage elements are met throughout the process. You will also find that it is important to Step of Green to develop a unique paved program for each of our clients based on their needs and budget to assure every walkway or terrace is a showcase for many years to come.
Landscape Lighting
Lighting is the hidden gem in the garden. We treat lighting as an element to extend the daily and seasonal use of a garden. If you can take a garden, add a few well placed lights, any garden becomes magical. We only use low voltage direct burial systems, with necessary transformers and timers to give our clients confidence when we are gone the lights won't go out. Low voltage lights are most often small and able to be hidden within the garden, are versatile with a variety of bulbs, and lenses, from halogen to LED. We do not provide or install solar lights as most often the lighting is poor or limited to their functionality.
Walls, Fences, Gates
A beautiful walled garden or one with a unique gated entrance can often turn something utilitarian into something dynamic. We understand the functionality of gates, walls and fences, we are keeping someone out or in, but at Step of Green we find solutions that add a level of mystery, lengthen a space or add a layer of detail to tie everything together. Although we often do not build our own carpentry or iron gates or fences, we only work with select craftsmen to assure the dream becomes a reality.
Pergolas, Trellises, Arbors
Bringing height to a garden is a great way to add dramatic changes in elevation and unique platforms for plant propagation. From Climbing roses to Wisteria to the hundreds of varieties of Clematis, having structures to allow for their growth can make your garden unique. We at Step of Green have found that to add a trellis or arbor to your garden while borrowing details from your residence is a fantastic way to knit the home and the garden into one cohesive space. Although we often do not build our own carpentry we only work with select craftsmen to assure the design and installation is unique to your home.
Outdoor Fireplaces, Grills, Kitchens
Gardens have become more than a place to have an iced tea or watch the kids play; they have become outdoor living areas for the whole family. What better way to bring the family together other than food, drinks and fire. Every outdoor space created at Step of Green is unique to the needs of our clients. From stand alone fire pits or fireplaces, to building barbeques, to full outdoor kitchens including cabinetry, sinks and fridges, to anything the heart can desire.
Rain Gardens/Bio Swales
A rain garden or Bio swale is basically a planted depression that allows rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas like roofs, driveways, walkways, and compacted lawn areas the opportunity to be absorbed. This reduces rain runoff by allowing storm water o soak into the ground as opposed to flowing into storm drains or surface waterways. These practices can reduce water pollutants form entering creeks and streams by 30%. They are also great solutions to drainage problems that have limited or no positive drainage away from the property. When Step of Green installs a rain garden or bio swale we always treat the initial problem area as an opportunity to make something great. Working with our drainage expertise as well as our horticultural knowledge, we create spaces that were once forgotten and avoided into gardens to be used and enjoyed.
Site Drainage Solutions
Site drainage is a part of the discussion in about 1005 of our projects. It can be as minute as assuring proper pitch in a new walkway to shed water properly to installing a large underground cistern that is used to water plants or provide a unique water feature. Step of Green is well versed in the needs of site drainage at every property. We find that often simple solutions and proper installations always bring a level of calm to our clients in knowing when it rains, it doesn't pour. We find that every drainage solution and application is unique to every garden, and our approach is to solve the problem effectively the first time.
Fertilization Programs
Fertilization is key to the longevity of every garden, but over fertilization is always detrimental. We find scheduled and proper application is important to make sure we can turn drab into beautiful. We offer both chemical and organic application methods and products, while allowing you the opportunity to find a solution that will best work for your budget and personal goals. As sample program may be as simple as:
Pesticide and Fertilizer applications
  • Pre emergent will be applied in March/April
  • Weed abatement and fertilizer to be applied in May
  • Balanced fertilizer and granular pesticide in June
  • Balanced Fertilizer in August
  • Winter fertilizer to be applied in September/October
  • Apply fungicide treatments to crabapples in spring to reduce Apple scab
Water Features
Water, not only is it the life blood of the garden, it can be one of the most aesthetically pleasing elements of any garden. Step of Green is well versed in the installation of ponds, waterfalls, pond less water features, streams and many others. We have created them as little as a small wall mounted water features to full fledge small ponds. We have installed stand alone fountains, cored through stone over a foot thick, used masonry structures and even found objects; each was always unique to the garden. And donít forget, these can be developed to work with your surface drainage and create unique water solutions.
Irrigation Solutions
Step of Green is a huge proponent of allowing the vegetation in a garden the ability to struggle. We see the benefit of Irrigation systems, but we are often concerned with the down side as well. Excessive or frequent water can cause plants to grow too quickly, causing weak branches; it can also cause plants to die to too much. When the client wants or needs to have a supplemental irrigation system installed, we work with a great team to install a system and program that promotes plant health while considering not abusing natural resources. We also service systems, with seasonal shutoffs and maintenance programs. These are great to assure the system is working at maximum efficiency while maintaining health and budgetary concerns of our clients.
And So Many More...
Step of Green has a personal motto; we take care of everything outside your door from greenscape to hardscape. If we can't do it in house we will find the contractor to who can, for instance we have installed or worked on the following:
  • Asphalt driveways
  • Installed mature trees over 35' tall
  • Pools
  • Decks
  • Heated Driveways
  • Cleaned Gutters
  • Cut Down Large Trees
  • Hauled Away Non-Vegetative Debris
  • Painted/Stained Fences
  • And I am sure even more to come...
